About Judge Moreno

Maggie Hernandez Moreno was born and raised in San Marcos and has spent her life committed to serving the community she calls home. She has proudly served as a Judge for nearly a decade (beginning in October 2016), bringing fairness, integrity, and real world experience to the bench. During her time on the court, she has presided over criminal and civil matters, jury trials, truancy cases, and a wide range of cases that affect families and neighborhoods every day.

Maggie has been a leader in creating practical, people focused solutions within the justice system. Working collaboratively with colleagues, she helped create and implement a juvenile diversion program in the Justice Courts, an initiative designed to hold young people accountable while providing opportunities to avoid long-term involvement in the court system.

Public service is deeply rooted in Maggie’s family. She continues a long-standing family tradition of community service as elected officials and community leaders. The judicial office she holds was previously held by her mother, and following her mother’s passing, Maggie chose to run for the position to continue that legacy of service. She also takes great pride in her father’s trailblazing career as the first Hispanic District Attorney in Hays County; his leadership helped open doors for future generations.

Beyond the courtroom, Maggie has served on numerous nonprofit boards and community organizations that address many of the same challenges she sees daily on the bench, including housing instability, access to legal resources, and barriers faced by working families. This involvement keeps her connected to the community and informs her work as a judge.

Judge Moreno has focused on improving access to justice by increasing transparency around court processes and ensuring court policies and procedures are fair, consistent, and responsive to community needs. One of her ongoing priorities is supporting efforts to expand access to court-appointed legal representation for individuals facing eviction, helping ensure people have a meaningful opportunity to be heard.

Maggie is married to Mario, a local educator, and together they are raising their two children, Benson and Jossalyn, in San Marcos. She is committed to serving with fairness, integrity, compassion, and respect for the rule of law, and to maintaining a court system that is fair, accessible, and worthy of the public’s trust.
